Michigan CNA Certification Information
Michigan is among the top ten states in need of Certified Nurse Aides. The Department of Community Health Bureau of Health Professions is in charge for reviewing and approving CNA programs. The Department of Community Health coordinates with Prometric to develop and administer the CNA State tests. Prometric also maintains the Michigan Registry, the master list, of all the certified nursing assistants in Michigan. The State follows the federal legislation of 1987 entitled the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) to ensure that all CNAs in MI provide a quality care among the resident or patient.

Michigan CNA Programs & Training Information
Michigan CNA training program must have at least 75 clock hours of training and 16 hours supervised practical training. Some state – approved training programs may differ when it comes to number of hours in classroom and practical training.

If an approved CNA wishes to work in Michigan, she/he must request an exemption form for nurse aide training. The applicants must have verification of certification sent from the previous state of certification to the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry. Verification will be reviewed. Upon approval the applicant will have to take the written and skills exam to be placed on Michigan’s registry. Note that you may work up to 4 months is a Michigan as a CNA while you are waiting for exemption, however, this is up to your employer.
Renewal in Michigan
To renew CNA Certification in Michigan:
(1) A pre-printed re-certification form will be mailed out to the CNA 2-3 months prior to the expiration of certification. If no notice is received a renewal form may be obtained by contacting Michigan Nurse Aide Registry or visiting the State Registry’s website.
(2) Qualifications for renewal:
You must work a minimum of 8 hours as a nursing assistant in the past 24 months.
Provide a employment documentation from your employer stating your work history
(3) Completed form with required documents and fees must be mailed to the address indicated in the form.
To renew Expired CNA Certification in Michigan:
(1) Obtain Exemption from Nurse Aide Training Form by contacting Michigan Nurse Aide Registry or visiting the website.
(2) Submit employer letter stating that you have worked and been paid as nurse aide for at least 8 hours in the last 24 months renewal.
(3) Completed form with required documents and fees must be mailed to the address indicated in the form.
